“He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’”

Revelation 21:5
Christ is changing hearts behind bars. Formerly a violent gang member, Eric now belongs to “God’s gang” and frequently attends the prison prayer group. When we studied Revelation 21, I thought Eric would be encouraged by Christ’s words, “I am making everything new!” But instead of feeling the joy of renewal, he felt burdened by judgment. “I’m not worthy to stand before Christ because of the things I’ve done,” Eric insisted.

We assured him that none of us is worthy. We can stand confidently before Christ only when we are clothed with the glowing garments of His righteousness. This is what makes us acceptable before our perfectly holy God. We need not fear Judgment Day. Rather, we look forward to hearing Him say to us—despite our lives of crime, or of pride, or of dishonesty, or of greed, or of lust, or of any of our sins—“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Know that the Eternal Judge is also your loving Savior. He is the God who saves you and makes a way when there seems to be no way, welcoming you with open arms.
