“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.”

John 14:16-17
The Lord made His presence known in various ways throughout the Old Testament. The New Testament tells how He came to us in the person of His Son, Jesus. When Jesus’ time on this earth was over and He ascended back to heaven, God provided Himself for us in His Holy Spirit. Though the third person of the Trinity did not become incarnate and could not be seen like Jesus was, He still is real and active in our lives.

The word “another” gives foundational truth. Jesus was our first Counselor, Comforter, Advocate, and Helper; the Holy Spirit is the successor. One study Bible note calls Him “One beside another of the same kind.” Jesus is telling His men the Comforter equals Me, and in my absence, He will do what I would do if I were physically present with you.

The Holy Spirit is in us! Think of the fellowship we have with God through Him, an even deeper bond than the earthly relationship Jesus had with His disciples. And our Helper is at our side, unfailingly providing strength and courage to face sin’s effects in our world.
