“Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said, ‘Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?’”

John 4:28-29
The idea of a good night’s sleep here in prison is to some inmates an oxymoron. Steel bunks and thin bedding along with bright lights and loud noises disturb everybody’s rest. Slight adjustments can be made to lessen the physical discomfort, but what can be done about the worst disturbance of all: an accusing conscience?
Nothing chased my sleep away quite like the involuntary reviews of my past. Nearly every time I closed my eyes, waves of regret would flood my mind. In addition to my terrible crimes, I also thought of my cruel words, broken promises, and wasted opportunities.
Like the Samaritan woman, I tried every day (and failed each time) to drown my remorse at the increasingly deep well of cheap thrills and one dissatisfying experience after another. One night in jail while reading the Bible, I realized that Jesus already knew all I had ever done (v. 29). And yet in His lavish, prodigal grace He sought me! He is the Fountain of living water (v. 13-14), satisfying the soul and cleansing the conscience forever.
