“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

John 14:27
The valley of uncertainty—that wide, unsettling place between what was known and stable and what will eventually be again—is a hard place to be in. An announcement of planned layoffs at work, a disclosure of medical test results, or a confrontation with sudden calamity are all enough to thrust us into uncertainty. Dear anxious believer, know that those times are, in fact, only temporary.
“I need thy presence every passing hour,/ What but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?/ Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be?/ Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me” (Henry F. Lyte, 1847).
The light of Christ shines through the gray clouds that have gathered overhead. Jesus has left us His peace, and it changes everything. Do not fret or fear. What comes into our lives is directed or permitted by His loving hand. What’s more, He promises to work all of it for our eventual good (see Romans 8:28). He took care to give us promise upon promise of His care. Uncertainty doesn’t seem quite as uncertain anymore, does it?
