Take the Challenge: 21 Days Through John

If reading the Bible is so beneficial, then why are many of us delinquent when it comes to spending time in God’s Word? Perhaps it’s for the same reason many of us abandon our January gym memberships and other New Year’s resolutions by the end of February—we simply lose our excitement and motivation.

That’s why we want to invite you to do something that’s both challenging and approachable … Read one chapter of John each day for the next 21 days. Sounds easy, right?

This 21-day plan goes chapter-by-chapter through John’s gospel and is perfect for both new and seasoned believers to delve deeper into the Great Story that’s All About Jesus. Will you take the challenge?

HOW TO GET STARTED

1. Set time aside each day.

Choose a time in which you can consistently read each day. Perhaps set your alarm to rise a little earlier or give yourself enough time at night to read before bed. If you commute, try reading on the train or bus, or simply take your lunch break to go someplace quiet and read. Forming a habit will help you succeed over the next 21 days!

2. Choose a Bible that you’re comfortable with.

The John Challenge will work with any Bible translation. So, whether you use your go-to study Bible or a focused Pocket Testament League Gospel of John, you’ll want to find something that you’ll look forward to revisiting every day.

3. Invite others to do it with you.

We believe that one of the greatest ways to make sure you set yourself up for success is by completing it with others. Rather than reading alone, we’d like to challenge you to reach out to four other friends or family members to take the challenge with you. Not only this give everyone in the group a sense of accountability, but it will also create an outlet for further questions and discussion for everyone involved.

4. Delve Deeper into each chapter.

Throughout the month of January, Haven is devoting each daily radio program to a chapter in John. You can follow the links below to listen to the full series. Either way, it’s important for you to follow along in your reading and get new insights and commentary on Gospel truths you may not have picked up on in your first reading.

Listen to Week 1: Introduction – John 3
Listen to Week 2: John 4 – 8
Listen to Week 3: John 9 – 13
Listen to Week 4: John 14 – 18
Listen to Week 5: John 19 – Conclusion

5. Pray and reflect after each reading.

This doesn’t have to be a long prayer, but one that reflects on what you’ve just read in God’s Word. You might even want to keep a journal with questions and observations that you can revisit later. When you take this time to pray and reflect on God’s Word, it not only helps you remember what you just read, but it will also help you better see how the Gospel of John impacts your daily life.

Whether you regularly read the Bible or it’s been too long time since you studied God’s Word, there’s something for everyone who takes sets aside three weeks to read a chapter of John each a day. And by the time you finish, we are confident that you will grow in your walk with God, while also having a deeper understanding of who Jesus is and what he came to do.

On January 3rd I was listening to you on the radio and heard the challenge, and I accepted the challenge. Not only did I accept it, I challenged my friends on Facebook and we created a group of 11 individuals. Each evening after we read the chapter of the day, we would post our thoughts. It has been amazing!
We finished last night, but . . . we’ve only just begun. I asked the members of our group if there was another book of the Bible they would like to read as a group. One suggested Ruth. So we are going to begin Ruth in a couple of days (some of our group have not been able to keep up so we are giving them time to finish John before we start Ruth).
Some of the comments have been: “I enjoy focusing on one chapter at a time”, “Chapter 11 really made it hit home to me that things were no different then than they are today. Someone attempting to do good for us and there has to be those that want to ruin that”, “I can’t decide if John was shouting ‘In the beginning was the Word’ & the following verses or if he was whispering it in awe”. These are just a few of the comments.
Thank you for this challenge and pray for our small group. We will be encouraging others to join.

Wow!Thanks so much for sharing your group’s experience with us. What a wonderful idea to create a Facebook group out of the challenge. May the Lord bless your time going chapter-by-chapter through Ruth! And, hey, if you’re interested in hearing some messages from Haven on Ruth, I remember this being an insightful 5-part series from 2014: https://www.haventoday.org/series/learning-from-ruth/
